Crypto Prices Today Jan 8: Bitcoin (BTC) Crashes, Altcoins Plunge

Crypto Prices Today: The cryptocurrency market experienced a bloodbath on Wednesday, with Bitcoin (BTC) falling below the 97K level, marking a sharp decline from $102K to $97K. The crash in crypto prices today was attributed to a significant rise in U.S. Treasury yields over the past decade. Additionally, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) released a report showing the December Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the private sector reached 54.1, up from November’s 52.1, adding to market volatility.

Major altcoins also witnessed sharp declines, with most falling by 5% to 10% in the past 24 hours. Meme coins faced similar pressure, as Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) dropped by 8% to 10% within the same timeframe.

The global crypto market fell approximately 6%, now standing at $3.38 trillion. However, trading volume surged by 27%, reaching $162 billion as investors reacted to the market downturn.

Crypto Prices Today: BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL Down Major

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL) saw sharp declines during the market crash. The fall in crypto prices today impacted these coins significantly. However, on a positive note, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse met with former U.S. President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, signaling potential future discussions on regulatory clarity.

Bitcoin Prices Today

Bitcoin price was trading at 96,633 dollars, with approximately 5% down in the last 24 hours. Its 24-hour low and high are 96,121 and 102,017 dollars, respectively. As per SoSo Value data, BTC ETFs have seen an outflow of 543 million dollars, with Ark & 21Shares selling 212 million dollars worth of ETFs, Grayscale selling 125 million dollars, and Bitwise selling 113 million dollars.

Ethereum Price Today

Ethereum (ETH) price today was trading at $3,383, reflecting an 8% drop in the last 24 hours. The 24-hour low and high were $3,357 and $3,687, respectively. The ETH ETF experienced an outflow of $86 million, with Fidelity selling $67 million of the ETF. BlackRock’s data is still awaited.

Solana Price Today

Solana (SOL) price today was $199, with an 8% drop in the last 24 hours. The 24-hour low and high were $198 and $217, respectively. Toronto’s Sol Strategies announced a CAD $25 million investment in Solana’s blockchain ecosystem.

XRP Price Today

Crypto prices today show XRP was down by approximately 3% in the last 24 hours. Its 24-hour low and high were $2.27 and $2.46, respectively. XRP’s market cap was at $134 billion.

Top Crypto Gainers Prices Today

Bitget Token

Bitget Token (BGB) was the only coin in the top 100 to be in the green in the last 24 hours. BGB price was trading at $6.52, showing an approximate 6% increase. Its 24-hour low and high were $6.21 and $6.64, respectively.

Top Crypto Losers Prices Today

Hyperliquid

HYPE was the worst performer today, down by 15% in the last 24 hours. Its 24-hour low and high were $21.95 and $26.29. Crypto prices today reflected this decline, with HYPE’s market cap at $7.31 billion and trading volume at $1.92 billion.

dYdX

DYDX price was down by 13% and was trading at $1.40. Its 24-hour low and high were $1.397 and $1.635, respectively.

Moreover, Fantom (FTM), Gala, and Beam were each down by 12% in the last 24 hours.

Meme Coin Prices Today

Meme coin prices today followed Bitcoin’s path, experiencing a sharp decline in the last 24 hours. Dogecoin (DOGE) price was down by 10%, trading at $0.35. Shiba Inu was also down by 9%, trading at $0.00002173. Other notable meme coins like PENGU, BONK, and PEPE were down by 10% to 12% in the last 24 hours.

Moreover, as per Coinglass data, the 24-hour liquidation was at $606 million, with $547 million coming from long positions and $59 million from short positions. Crypto prices today were impacted as, in the last 4 hours, total liquidation was $85 million, with $77 million from long positions. In the past 24 hours, 192,418 traders were liquidated. The largest single liquidation order occurred on Binance for ETHUSDT, valued at $17.74 million.
