a16z Appoints Erik Torenberg as General Partner – Here’s What Startups Can Expect

a16z new general partner

a16z New General Partner:- In a move that’s stirring fresh excitement across venture capital and tech founder circles, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) – the top VC firm known for its bullish crypto bets –  has appointed Erik Torenberg as a General Partner.

Torenberg’s arrival signals a stronger bet by a16z on integrating VC and media ecosystem – the latter is the space he has long championed.

Torenberg, is best known for co-founding the influential podcast network and media brand Turpentine, as well as the founder-focused VC firm Village Global.

With his appointment, a16z is simultaneously acquiring Turpentine as part of the deal. This marks the convergence of venture capital, media, and community

His entry comes at a time when VCs are increasingly realizing that beyond capital, what startups need most is distribution, credibility, and narrative control.

By blending investment with strategic storytelling, a16z can sharpen its edge in attracting top founders and giving portfolio companies a louder voice.

While Torenberg hasn’t been front-and-center in crypto circles, he’s long been embedded in the ecosystems that surround it.

He’s a founder of Village Global, which has invested in a wide range of startups. Some of which touch crypto/Web3, though it’s not their central focus.

Further, he has also co-founded On Deck, a platform for talent and startup formation that’s community-driven. During the 2021 Web3 boom, Torenberg launched a dedicated Web3 fellowship on Deck – supporting founders in the space.

Many of his conversations (especially on Turpentine and Moment of Zen) include crypto founders, decentralized governance thinkers, and tech-libertarian adjacent topics.

Further, a16z has acquired Torenberg’s media empire, Turpentine which hosts a growing list of popular podcasts such as Upstream, The Cognitive Revolution, and The AI Breakdown.

These shows, often ranked in Apple’s top charts for technology and business, have become must-listens for a certain breed of founder, builder, and investor.

Notably, this news comes as the pro-crypto Paul Altkins takes role as the new SEC chair.

Can Startups Expect the Media Spotlight

The big question now: Will startups in a16z’s ecosystem see greater exposure and credibility through this media integration? All signs point to yes.

In a X post filled with gratitude and excitement, Torenburg revealed his next steps at the firm. He said, “I’m stoked to partner with the next generation of great entrepreneurs and also hire even more fantastic people into the firm. DMs are open and my email is et@a16z.com.”

For early-stage founders, especially those building in AI, crypto, and biotech, the opportunity to tell their stories via high-signal media platforms could give them a serious edge over competitors. This is where Torenberg’s audience overlaps significantly.

It can also strengthens a16z’s pitch to new startups: capital, plus community, plus storytelling.

Further, Erik Torenberg’s well-networked with people in the crypto world –  including folks like Balaji Srinivasan, Chris Dixon, Katie Haun, Naval Ravikant, Vitalik Buterin, Linda Xie.

Torenberg’s appointment also underscores a broader shift in venture capital. As traditional differentiation—check size, network, operational help—starts to blur across firms, influence is becoming the new moat. Media, audience, and trust are emerging as tools that can’t be quickly copied. Coingape’s BrandTalk is another example of such growing efforts in that direction.

As the industry watches how this integration unfolds, one thing is clear: startups under the a16z umbrella may no longer just raise capital—they might also raise the mic.
