Navy Federal Investment Services has selected Apex Fintech Solutions to power a new digital investing platform that will be made available to more than 15 million members of Navy Federal Credit Union. While the announcement introduces another digital brokerage offering, its broader significance lies in what it says about the future of wealth management: banks and credit unions increasingly want customers to invest without leaving their existing financial institution.
The new platform, built on Apex’s cloud-native AscendOS infrastructure, will allow members to open investment accounts in real time, fund them directly from their Navy Federal accounts, trade stocks and exchange-traded funds, purchase fractional shares from as little as $1 and invest through automated portfolios. Rather than sending members to an external brokerage, Navy Federal is integrating investing into the same ecosystem where customers already manage their banking relationship.
Credit Unions Are Entering the Embedded Investing Era
For years, digital investing has largely been driven by standalone fintech firms and online brokerages that encouraged customers to move cash away from traditional financial institutions. That model is beginning to change.
Banks and credit unions increasingly recognize that deposits, payments, lending and investing are no longer separate financial products in consumers’ minds. Customers expect to manage their financial lives through a single mobile application, whether they are transferring money, applying for a loan or buying an exchange-traded fund.
That has created growing demand for embedded investing infrastructure, allowing financial institutions to add brokerage capabilities without building an entire securities platform from scratch or becoming specialists in market infrastructure, custody and clearing.
For Apex, this trend represents one of the largest opportunities in wealth technology. Rather than competing for end customers, the company provides the technology that enables banks, fintechs, advisors and financial institutions to launch investing products under their own brands.
Why Scale Matters
The Navy Federal partnership also demonstrates why infrastructure has become one of the defining competitive advantages in digital investing.
Launching an investing platform for millions of potential users is fundamentally different from serving a small fintech startup. Every stage of the customer journey, from identity verification and account opening to funding, order routing, portfolio management and regulatory reporting, must operate in real time while maintaining the reliability expected of a large financial institution.
According to Apex, AscendOS was selected because its cloud-native architecture can support growing demand while delivering real-time account opening and funding alongside automated investment management.
Bill Capuzzi, Chief Executive Officer of Apex Fintech Solutions, said the collaboration is intended to make investing more accessible for the military community.
“By joining forces with Navy Federal Investment Services, we’re helping bring real-time account opening and automated portfolio management to those who serve and have served our country and their families.”
A Wealth Offering Designed Around Existing Relationships
The platform combines several features that have become standard across modern digital brokerages but are still relatively new within many traditional financial institutions.
Members will be able to open investment accounts instantly and transfer funds directly from their existing Navy Federal Credit Union accounts. Self-directed investors can trade stocks and exchange-traded funds while purchasing fractional shares starting at just $1, lowering the capital required to begin investing. Those seeking a more hands-off approach can instead choose automated, goals-based portfolios that use Apex’s portfolio rebalancing technology to maintain target allocations over time.
The strategy allows Navy Federal to extend existing customer relationships rather than asking members to establish separate brokerage accounts elsewhere. For the credit union, that means greater engagement across multiple financial products. For customers, it reduces the friction typically associated with moving money between unrelated financial institutions.
The Military Community Represents a Unique Opportunity
Navy Federal Credit Union serves one of the largest membership bases in U.S. financial services, consisting primarily of active-duty servicemembers, veterans, Department of Defense personnel and their families. That membership exceeds 15 million people, making it one of the largest credit unions globally.
Historically, credit unions have emphasized savings accounts, lending and financial education rather than sophisticated digital wealth platforms. As younger members increasingly expect investing capabilities alongside everyday banking, many institutions are reassessing how they deliver long-term wealth services without fundamentally changing their cooperative business model.
Diane Young, Chief Operating Officer of Navy Federal Financial Group, said scalability was a key consideration in selecting Apex.
“As we continue to explore ways to provide our members with a best-in-class investor experience, it’s critical that our infrastructure is able to scale without sacrificing the seamless experience our members expect and deserve. Apex’s real-time platform helps us better support the military community and their families by making investing more accessible and giving them more opportunities to build toward a stronger financial future.”
Infrastructure Is Becoming the Battleground
The partnership reflects a broader evolution taking place across financial services. Competition is shifting away from standalone trading applications and toward the technology platforms that enable investing to appear wherever consumers already manage their finances.
That trend has accelerated as embedded finance expands beyond payments and lending into wealth management. Financial institutions increasingly want brokerage capabilities that can be integrated into existing mobile apps while preserving their own brand identity and customer relationships.
For infrastructure providers such as Apex, success depends less on attracting retail investors directly and more on enabling large institutions to launch modern investing experiences at scale. For banks and credit unions, the objective is equally clear: keep customers inside their own digital ecosystem as investing becomes another everyday financial activity rather than a separate destination.
